Sky high

Every Spring holidays we look forward to spending time in Obachan's little town and surroundings. Although in these currents times we have come to quickly realise that events and/or plans don't always go the way one would wish.

In all honesty we are fine with that. You see we had planned to celebrate a birthday on the beach since last years experience was one we wanted to enjoy again. However, the day before this beautifully organised day, the weather was just perfect with not a cloud in the sky. And the next day being the birthday was forecast to rain. Why am telling you all of this? Well, after a rather bad typhoon we had experienced last year one corner section of the tiled roof had lifted off and  exposed the mud that is traditionally laid between the roof frame and tile. This area was directly under the toilet. So, over time when it rained the water would naturally seep through and weaken the ceiling below leaking onto the floor.
As we were planning on celebrating a day earlier to catch that beautiful day, we knew that our plans needed to change if we wanted to avoid a muddy, wet mess on our toilet floor.

So, we pulled up the tile and cleared away the mud and got to work making it right.

Since this job had been put off a bit too long, the ceiling had to be removed and replaced. Luckily we just had the right pieces from another job. I love that when it happens, using what you have with left overs.

Then we just measured and cut the pieces that were needed and secured them to the frame.

Nearly done....

Look at all the old rubble beside the sink....and in the sink!

And we are finished from the underside! Now to lay some plastic sheeting and then place the tiles back. Which seemed like a jigsaw puzzle.

Now I know it doesn't look like the most beautiful job, but we used what we had. This would have to do for now. The next part is to apply a white mortar to keep the tiles together. This is planned for another day. But I am here to tell you that while this job took up all of that beautiful sunny, "birthday breakfast on the beach" day, we knew it was the right decision to tackle this job when we did. Because during the night the rain came down so heavily, but we slept soundly knowing that we would not be running to get a bucket for any leaks!
